Trump has appointed Rubio as the head of a commission on Ukraine’s security guarantees, which will consist of U.S., Ukrainian, European, and NATO officials. The commission was agreed upon during a White House meeting between Trump and seven European leaders. The security assurances will consist of four parts: air defense, a military presence, tracking the cessation of fighting, and armaments. Rubio, Trump’s national security advisor, was also part of a closed-door meeting with the Russian delegation in Alaska. Trump spoke to Putin over the phone after the meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders at the White House. The call lasted around 40 minutes, and Trump promised to set up a meeting between Zelensky and the Kremlin. Russia has so far refused to commit to such a meeting. Trump has also expressed interest in providing air support for Kyiv as part of security guarantees. The Russian foreign minister warned NATO leaders against summoning NATO forces to Ukraine as part of a peace deal.
Rubio is set to head the commission on Ukraine’s security guarantees.
