The State Department has halted the issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers, citing the increasing number of international commercial operators posing a threat to American lives. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on U.S. roads is endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers. This comes after the arrest of Harjinder Singh, a truck driver accused of making an illegal U-turn that killed people. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has launched an investigation into the deadly Florida highway crash. In April, Trump penned an executive order requiring all commercial truck drivers operating in the U.S. to be proficient in English, which was designated as the country’s official language in March. The State Department confirmed that it is vetting over 55 million U.S. visa holders for possible deportable infractions, including criminal activity, visa overstays, and engagement in any form of “terrorist activity.” The State Department also paused visas for visitors from the Gaza Strip as it conducts a thorough review of the process and procedures used to issue temporary medical-humanitarian visas.
