President Trump has appointed Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia as the U.S.’s first chief design officer, aiming to update the federal government’s design language to be both “usable and beautiful.” Gebbia, who joined the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) earlier this year and is on the board of Tesla, aims to improve government services to be as satisfying to use as the Apple Store: beautifully designed, great user experience, run on modern software. He will lead the newly created National Design Studio, which will work on making digital services at various federal government agencies more efficient. The new body will advise agencies on reducing duplicative design costs, using standardized design to enhance public trust in high-impact service providers, and dramatically improving the quality of experiences offered to the American public. Gebbia will help recruit top creative talent, coordinate with executive departments and agencies, and devise innovative solutions. The heads of government will consult with Gebbia to implement the America by Design initiative at their respective agencies, with the studio closing down in three years.
