The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been ousted by the Trump administration, with Susan Monarez, the agency’s leader, reportedly refusing to step down. Monarez claimed her policies were not aligned with President Trump’s “Making America Healthy Again” agenda. Four other senior leaders at the agency resigned following the news. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the president has the authority to fire those not aligned with his mission. The removal came after a disagreement between Monarez and Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about the director’s decision not to pull approvals for several updated COVID-19 vaccines. HHS chief Robert F. Kennedy Jr. defended the decision, stating that the agency is in trouble and that it may be necessary to remove some employees. Trump has also been in talks with Republicans on Capitol Hill about a proposed federal crime bill.
